How We Calculate
Our window replacement calculator estimates project costs based on number of windows, window type, and project scope. The formula is: total cost = count × per-window cost × scope multiplier.
How the math works: Each window type has a material cost and labor cost per unit. The total per-window cost = material + labor. The project scope multiplier adjusts the total: standard replacement (same-size insert) is 1.0×, full-frame replacement (removing the entire frame down to studs) is 1.2×, and resize/new opening is 1.3× due to structural framing work.
Window Type Comparison
Single-Hung Vinyl ($350–$650/window) has a fixed upper sash and operable lower sash. Most affordable option for standard rooms and bedrooms.
Double-Hung Vinyl ($400–$800/window) has two operable sashes that tilt in for cleaning. The most popular residential replacement window. Excellent for any room.
Casement ($500–$950/window) cranks open outward for maximum ventilation and the tightest weather seal. Best energy efficiency among operable windows. Ideal above sinks and counters.
Bay / Bow ($900–$2,000/window) projects outward to create extra space and panoramic views. Bay windows have 3 panels; bow windows have 4–5 curved panels. Higher cost reflects structural support and larger size.
Sliding Glass Door ($700–$1,500/unit) includes standard 6-ft patio doors. Replaces existing sliding doors or converts a wall opening. Includes track, frame, and hardware.
Project Scope
Standard replacement (1.0×) installs new windows into the existing frame opening. Full-frame replacement (1.2×) removes the entire window including the frame down to the rough opening — needed when frames are rotted or damaged. Resize/new opening (1.3×) involves cutting or framing a new opening — requires structural headers and permits.
Safety & Licensing
Window replacement involving structural changes (full-frame or resize) should be performed by licensed, insured contractors. Full-frame and resize work may require building permits. Always verify contractor licensing, insurance, and check references before hiring. Improper installation voids manufacturer warranties and can cause water damage.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does window replacement cost? +
Window replacement costs $350–$2,000 per window depending on type and scope. Single-hung vinyl averages $350–$650, double-hung vinyl $400–$800, casement $500–$950, bay/bow $900–$2,000, and sliding glass doors $700–$1,500. A 15-window home with double-hung vinyl costs $6,000–$12,000 for standard replacement.
How much does it cost to replace one window? +
A single window replacement costs $350–$950 for standard types. Single-hung vinyl is $350–$650, double-hung vinyl $400–$800, and casement $500–$950. Full-frame replacement adds 20% and resizing the opening adds 30% to labor costs. Getting quotes from 3 contractors ensures a fair price.
What are the best replacement windows? +
Double-hung vinyl windows offer the best combination of value, performance, and convenience at $400–$800 per window. They’re energy-efficient, low-maintenance, tilt in for easy cleaning, and come in many styles. Fiberglass frames cost more but last longer. Look for Energy Star certification and a low U-factor (≤0.30).
Should I repair or replace my windows? +
Replace windows if they’re over 20 years old, have failed seals (foggy between panes), won’t stay open, have rotting frames, or let in noticeable drafts. Repair is worthwhile for minor issues like worn weatherstripping ($5–$15/window), broken hardware ($25–$75), or a single cracked pane ($75–$200).
How much can new windows save on energy bills? +
Energy Star replacement windows save $126–$465 per year on heating and cooling costs, according to EPA estimates. Double-pane Low-E windows reduce heat transfer by 25–50% compared to single-pane. Homes in cold climates see the biggest savings. The payback period is typically 5–10 years.
Are there tax credits for replacement windows? +
Yes. The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covers 30% of the cost of Energy Star Most Efficient windows, up to $600 per year for windows. The windows must meet Energy Star Most Efficient criteria. Some states offer additional rebates. Keep receipts and manufacturer certifications for your tax filing.
How long do replacement windows last? +
Vinyl replacement windows last 20–40 years, fiberglass 40–50+ years, wood 30–50+ years (with maintenance), and aluminum 20–30 years. Double-pane insulated glass units typically last 15–25 years before seal failure. Quality installation with proper flashing is the biggest factor in longevity.
