How We Calculate

Our drywall installation cost calculator estimates project costs based on wall/ceiling area, finish level, and old drywall removal. Costs include materials (sheets, screws, tape, mud) and professional labor.

How the math works: Material cost = area × $0.40–$0.80/sq ft (drywall sheets & supplies). Labor cost = area × finish level price. Removal cost = area × $0.50–$1.50/sq ft if included. Total = materials + labor + removal.

Finish Level Comparison

Hang Only ($1.50–$2.50/sq ft) covers hanging drywall sheets with screws. No taping or mudding. Used for garages, sheds, or when you'll finish it yourself. Requires 1 day.

Hang & Tape ($2.50–$3.50/sq ft) includes hanging sheets and taping joints with paper tape and first coat of mud. Not ready for paint. Used when budget is tight or doing DIY finishing. Requires 1–2 days.

Full Finish (Level 3) ($3.00–$4.50/sq ft) is the standard for residential. Includes hanging, taping, and 2 coats of joint compound. Ready for texture or flat paint. Suitable for 95% of homes. Requires 3–4 days.

Smooth Finish (Level 4-5) ($4.00–$6.00/sq ft) includes 3+ coats of mud and extensive sanding for perfectly smooth walls. Required for non-textured walls with satin/gloss paint, wallpaper, or critical lighting. Adds 1–2 days.

Material Costs

Drywall sheets cost $12–$20 per sheet (4×8 ft = 32 sq ft). Standard 1/2" costs $12–$15/sheet. Fire-rated 5/8" Type X costs $18–$20/sheet. Add screws ($8/lb), paper tape ($5/roll), joint compound ($15–$25 per 5-gal bucket), and primer ($30/gal). Typical materials: $0.40–$0.80/sq ft.

Additional Cost Factors

Our estimates cover standard 8-ft ceilings and simple rooms. Not included: high ceilings (add 20–30% for 10+ ft), complex layouts (add 15–25% for angles, curves, vaults), soundproofing ($1–$2/sq ft for double layers or resilient channels), moisture-resistant drywall ($15–$25/sheet for bathrooms), and texturing ($0.50–$1.50/sq ft for orange peel or knockdown).

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does drywall installation cost? +

Drywall installation costs $3–$4.50 per sq ft for full finish (hang, tape, 2 coats mud). Hang-only costs $1.50–$2.50/sq ft, hang & tape $2.50–$3.50/sq ft, and smooth Level 4-5 finish $4–$6/sq ft. A 500 sq ft room costs $1,500–$2,250 for full finish. Add $0.50–$1.50/sq ft for old drywall removal.

What is included in drywall installation? +

Full drywall installation includes: (1) hanging sheets with screws, (2) taping joints with paper tape, (3) 2-3 coats of joint compound (mud), (4) sanding smooth, and (5) priming. Level 3 finish is standard for texture or flat paint. Level 4-5 requires extra coats and sanding for smooth paint or wallpaper.

Can I install drywall myself to save money? +

Yes, DIY drywall installation saves 60–70% on labor but requires skill and tools. Hanging sheets is straightforward with a helper, but taping and mudding require practice for professional results. Expect 2–3 coats of mud, drying time between coats (24 hrs), and extensive sanding. Rent a drywall lift ($40/day) for ceilings.

How long does drywall installation take? +

Professional crews install 500 sq ft in 1–2 days for full finish. Hanging sheets takes 4–6 hours. First coat of mud (taping) takes 4–6 hours, then 24 hrs drying. Second coat takes 2–3 hours, then 24 hrs drying. Final coat and sanding takes 4–6 hours. Total elapsed time: 3–4 days with drying.

What is the difference between Level 3, 4, and 5 finish? +

Level 3: 2 coats mud, ready for texture or flat paint. Most common for residential. Level 4: 3 coats mud, smooth for satin/eggshell paint and wallpaper. Required for non-textured walls. Level 5: Skim coat over entire surface for perfect smoothness. Used for gloss paint, critical lighting, or high-end homes. Each level costs $0.50–$1/sq ft more.

Should I use 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch drywall? +

1/2 inch is standard for walls and most ceilings with 16" joist spacing. 5/8 inch costs 20% more but is required for: fire-rated walls (garages, furnace rooms), ceilings with 24" joist spacing, soundproofing between rooms, and commercial buildings. Use 5/8" Type X for 1-hour fire rating.

How much does it cost to remove old drywall? +

Old drywall removal costs $0.50–$1.50 per sq ft, including disposal. A 500 sq ft room costs $250–$750 for removal. DIY removal saves money but is dusty and time-consuming. Rent a dumpster ($300–$500 for 10 yard) for disposal. Wear respirator mask — old drywall may contain asbestos (pre-1980 homes).

Do I need a permit for drywall installation? +

Permits are not required for replacing drywall in existing rooms. Permits ARE required for: adding new walls that change room layout, finishing unfinished basements or attics, removing load-bearing walls, or work that includes electrical/plumbing. Check local building codes. Unpermitted work can affect home resale and insurance claims.
